Student self reflection7/30/2023 ![]() The idea is to do more than just plan the work, but also to reflect on how students will interact with the learning opportunities presented. As you plan your lessons, imagine students participating in direct instruction, working through guided or independent practice, collaborating in small groups, or reacting to your purposefully placed questions. You need to prepare in advance don’t wing it! 4. Spend time in your instructional planning being specific about the tasks and questions planned. To make the most of these small-group learning opportunities, the key is an appropriately placed task or question. Of course, in an actual classroom, you can create space for students to meet face to face. In a hybrid classroom, pair students who are in class with those learning from home. ![]() If you are in a remote space, this can be accomplished through virtual breakout rooms or discussion boards. Plan multiple points in your lesson to allow students to discuss learning with each other. We are able to move new information from short- to long-term memory in many ways, including discussion with peers. Teachers required self-reflection three times throughout the day. When I worked as a principal, we created our own logbooks and had them printed locally so we could intentionally build reflection into the school day. This will encourage caregivers to start discussions with students about what they wrote in their planners. Let families know about this new reflection tool, too. If you build this as an expectation across the school, you will move the entire school culture into a mode of reflection. In addition to their assignments, you can have (or even require) students to write one key lesson they learned or a question they have about the material. Many schools have students write their homework assignments in planners. Based on the age of your students, create chunks of time in your schedule for instruction followed by reflection. This helps students think about the information, process it in their own words, and compare their thinking with that of their classmates. You could say to your students, “I’m going to give you 90 seconds to write down everything you heard me say during direction instruction.” Then, after 90 seconds, have students discuss their notes with classmates. ![]() In other words, we need to “chunk” the learning that happens.įor example, after I give direct instruction for the allotted time, I could move students into a reflection activity that asks them to react to the information. This means that as we plan instruction, we should create a pace that moves students from opportunity to opportunity every eight minutes. An 8-year-old can focus on a task for about eight minutes. Students’ attention spans typically correspond with their age. Here are four teaching tips to plan your curriculum in a way that encourages student self-reflection. Move information from short- to long-term memory. When students reflect on their learning, they can: A commitment to purposeful instructional planning can help. We must create systems and processes that foster a culture of reflection in our classrooms if we are to help students reach their learning goals. Research shows that thinking deeply about a subject improves learning. Summarization and self-reported grades, for instance, are two approaches that can be particularly impactful. So, how can your rather intelligent son have no idea what he did at school today? Sound familiar? Why Is Self-Reflection Important for Students?Įducational researcher John Hattie has conducted a multitude of research studies that analyzed the effects of different teaching strategies, including those that emphasize the importance of reflection for students. Your child had seven class periods, from Spanish to geometry to western civilization. When you ask your high school student what he did at school, the response is “nothing.” Now, we all know that isn’t true. You sit down at the dinner table with your children and ask about their day. At the same time, it is evident that there is no room for complacency as poaching and illegal trade remain acute threats," said Dr Grethel Aguilar, Acting Director General of IUCN. "While Africa’s rhinos are by no means safe from extinction, the continued slow recovery of Black Rhino populations is a testament to the immense efforts made in the countries the species occurs in, and a powerful reminder to the global community that conservation works. The IUCN Red List now includes 116,177 species of which 31,030 are threatened with extinction. Population models predict a further slow increase over the next five years, according to today’s update. A giraffe can send blood through these smaller blood vessels into the middle of each patch to release heat from the body.Between 20, the Black Rhino ( Diceros bicornis) population across Africa has grown at a modest annual rate of 2.5% from an estimated 4,845 to 5,630 animals in the wild, respectively. Their spots also have far more use than the obvious camouflage they provide and around each spot is a large blood vessel which branches off in a complex system of blood vessels underneath the spot. Spots: Each giraffe has a pattern of spots that is completely unique to them, much like a humans’ fingerprint. Interestingly male giraffes often have thicker ossicones than females, which become bald on top due to frequent necking. Both males and females are born with their ossicones but they lie flat at birth and are not attached to the skull in order to avoid injury to themselves and the mother, fusing to the skull as they grow older. Horns: Giraffes' horns are actually known as ossicones and are found in both males and females, they are formed from ossified cartilage and covered in skin and hair. The giraffe’s neck has a very complex system that regulates their blood pressure, ensuring that plenty of blood gets to their brain but not too much when they bend down to take a drink. ![]() This is a ritualised fight that appears to help establish dominance, and involves repeatedly swinging their neck to deliver head-butts to the other bull on their body and belly. The neck is also used for ‘necking’ in Bulls. This allows giraffes to reach the highest leaves and shoots up in the Acacia tree (their favourite food source), which others browsers cannot reach, whilst also keeping an eye out for predators from their vantage point. Neck: One of the distinguishing characteristics of a giraffe is its long neck. Scotus affirmative action case7/29/2023 When it comes to affirmative action, Harvard's program has long been a constitutional model cited by the court in dealing with programs at other schools. ![]() And they now have been joined by three Trump-appointed conservatives. But all of those justices have retired or died, and three of the justices who voted against affirmative action in 2016 - Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito - are still on the court. In each, the court's controlling opinion was authored by a traditionally conservative justice. Starting in 1978, the Supreme Court has upheld the constitutionality of affirmative action programs three times. The suits claimed that Harvard and UNC impermissibly used race in their admissions processes and discriminated against Asian Americans. It will also reexamine 43 years of precedent by asking whether race can ever play a role in admissions.īoth cases were filed on the same day, back in 2014, by the conservative activist group Students for Fair Admissions. The court will consider more than just the details of how Harvard and UNC operate their affirmative action programs. Arguments in the two cases will likely be heard in the court's new term, which begins in October. With the court already having heard arguments this term on abortion and guns, the affirmative action cases mark yet another politically charged issue that threatens to uproot decades of legal doctrine. The Supreme Court said Monday it will revisit the question of affirmative action in higher education, deciding to hear cases challenging the use of race as one factor in admissions at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina. ![]() The Supreme Court will hear arguments in the fall over the constitutionality of Harvard University's affirmative action program. Ontario lockdown update today7/29/2023 ![]() The Local Lockdown Program, which was introduced in October 2021 and became law on December 17, 2021, provides businesses that face new local lockdowns with up to the maximum amount of support available through the wage and rent subsidy programs. The Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion We’ll continue to be there for Canadians, and help make sure that they have the support they need to stay home and stay safe.” We’ve seen just how vital these supports have been to Canadians so far, and we have to ensure they’re available in the event that regional lockdowns continue. ![]() That’s why we’re extending the temporary expanded lockdown definition for the Canada Worker Lockdown Benefit. “We are beginning to see public health measures easing in some parts of the country, but this pandemic still remains uncertain. The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Given recent announcements by provinces, that process is now underway.” But we made sure we were ready and that we had the flexibility to extend benefits until provincial restrictions are removed. “In October, when we introduced these more targeted measures, we didn’t know the Omicron variant was coming. With lower than anticipated accessing of the enhanced COVID worker benefits announced on December 22, 2021, today’s extension is expected to be fully covered by the $4.5 billion Omicron provision announced in the recent 2021 Economic and Fiscal Update. This benefit provides $300 a week in income support to eligible workers affected by a COVID-19-related public health lockdown order, and who are either unable to work or have lost 50 per cent or more of their income as a result. Canada Worker Lockdown Benefit: Eligibility would continue to include workers in regions where capacity-limiting restrictions of 50 per cent or more are in place. The 12-month revenue decline test continues to not be required in order to access this support. Eligible employers would receive wage and rent subsidies from 25 per cent up to a maximum of 75 per cent, depending on their degree of revenue loss. Local Lockdown Program: Eligibility would continue to include employers subject to capacity-limiting restrictions of 50 per cent or more and the current-month revenue decline threshold requirement would remain at 25 per cent.Using regulatory authority provided in Bill C-2, the government intends to propose expanding access announced on Decemby one month, until March 12, 2022: Today, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, and the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion, announced the federal government’s intention to extend enhanced key support programs to ensure Canadians are protected and workers and businesses continue to get help through ongoing public health restrictions. The federal government will continue to support Canadian workers and businesses where provincial and territorial public health restrictions, including capacity restrictions, remain in place. FebruOttawa, Ontario - Department of Finance Canada Cook the macaroni elbows until soft (maybe one minute past al dente). Something that sets this mac salad recipe apart is that you can prep it the night before for best flavor. So if you’re a Hawaiian mac salad purist, don’t come at me. In fact, some friends from Hawai’i told me this was the MOST ONO mac salad they ever had. So you can see my dilemma in trying to decide how to categorize this mac salad. Plus, I mix in kamaboko, which I feel like is very Hawaiian, despite being a Japanese ingredient. My Japanese/Hawaiian mac salad uses sushi seasoning and lots of mixed in ingredients, but relies on plain American mayonnaise. No pickling liquid or brine, no cucumber or ham. The dressing is ONLY Best Foods mayonnaise. Most Hawaiian mac salad recipes include ONLY shredded carrots as a mix-in ingredient. Is it even a plate lunch without mac salad?Īm I asking too many rhetorical questions in this blog post? (Yes.) Mac salad is crucial to modern Hawaiian cuisine. Instead, I use Best Foods, also known as Hellman’s, which is a hallmark of Hawaiian mac salad. However, mine does NOT use Japanese mayonnaise, which some would say is a hallmark for Japanese mac salad. I see many Japanese macaroni salad recipes also use rice vinegar or a sushi seasoning for the “pickled” flavor, and mine does as well. The mayonnaise is typically Japanese mayonnaise, which is spiced and flavorful, unlike American mayonnaise. What is Japanese Macaroni Salad?įirst of all, how did Japanese people even start making these creamy salad sides? I mean, really, with mac salad and potato salad both being popular in Japan, did the US midwest somehow seep into Japanese culinary culture?Īnyway, Japanese macaroni salad is much like American macaroni salad in that it has a mayonnaise dressing and a few mix-ins, usually vegetables like cucumber and maybe some ham as protein. There are aspects of both Hawaiian mac salad and Japanese mac salad… so which is it? No clue! Let’s take a deep dive into mac salad styles. This recipe is another one that I’ve adapted from an old church cookbook, written by Japanese grandmas who lived in or had relatives from Hawaii. Or is it the other way around? Hawaiian mac salad with Japanese influence? Soaked in sushi seasoning and tossed in mayo with assorted cut veggies, it’s a total umami bomb! Start cooking the night before for the best flavor.Īh, Japanese macaroni salad. I added some leftover ham from our Honey-caramel ham recipe because that just seemed more authentically Hawaiian to me – well, maybe not as authentic as Spam but I’m not that brave! Chicken or even tofu would work well, too. This Asian macaroni salad is like Hawaiian mac salad with Japanese flair. Of course, you can use any pasta to make this salad, and you can swap out the vegetables I’ve suggested here for ones your crew is more likely to eat. Even when left to marinade overnight the vegetables stay crunchy – providing a great contrast to the soft, perfectly cooked noodles. This easy cold pasta salad recipe is fresh and slightly sweet, thanks to a hit of pineapple juice. Mom & pop joints and food trucks are where I’m going to head to really experience Hawaiian food culture – but for now, this salad is tiding me over.
